Minnesota Vikings Fantasy Preview For Week 8
Minnesota’s not just a definitive tale of two oppositely charged phases, but a major validation of all the boomers screaming how defense wins championships. Easily the NFL’s best defensive unit as league leaders in PPG (12.3), yards/play (4.5), and success rate (62.1%), the offense isn’t making for many easy wins. It starts with Kyler Murray, who’s yet to throw for +250 yards or multiple TDs in any game. The 30.8 rushing yards/game over the last four keep him from bottoming out in fantasy, but there’s a reason K1’s yet to achieve a single top-15 finish — the macros stink (-0.12 EPA/dropback, 6.6 yards/attempt, 32.8% throws to sticks, 2.4% TD:INT ratio).
Murray taking sacks (12 total, 8.8% rate) and flopping against the blitz (-0.40 EPA/dropback) resonates downstream to negatively affect all associated pass catchers. Yes, even alpha Justin Jefferson’s feeling the burn in Kyler’s four starts. Despite strong enough advanced metrics to hold onto hope (23.2% target/route, 2.25 yards/route), J-Jeff’s 5.3 targets/game for 11.1 fantasy points falls way short of ADP-correlated expectations. Now, if a goat like Jefferson remains unable to feast on the regular, there’s almost no chance for secondary pieces like Jordan Addison, though I’d still hold where possible since he’s at least fully supplanted Jauan Jennings in 12-personnel. Meanwhile, T.J. Hockenson’s going to frustrate at times for the same meta-level inconsistencies holding everyone else back, but you must remain firm — he’s Kyler’s top target with some of the best advanced metrics at the position over the last month (29.9% target/route, 2.28 yards/route).
Jordan Mason returned to lead the backfield in baseline work upon returning from IR (15-68-0), looking decent against an otherwise weak Indianapolis front seven. I’d be pretty lukewarm on any RBs’ role in this MIN offense, except veteran Aaron Jones, who aggravated that previous knee injury late in Sunday's 16-10 win against the Colts. After departing, Mason played 93% of snaps, earning 100% of the backfield opportunities. Whether or not he’ll command targets is yet to be seen — a role that could go to fifth-round rookie out of Michigan, Max Bredeson (if you’re looking for a no-cost contingency add).
- Start: Jordan Mason (RB10), Justin Jefferson (WR6), TJ Hockenson (TE7)
- Sit: Jordan Addison (WR40), Jauan Jennings (WR79)
- Sleeper: Kyler Murray (QB11)
Detroit Lions Fantasy Preview For Week 8
The only thing able to stop a Detroit offense that’s top-5 by every observable metric (30.7PPG, 66.3 plays/game, 6.0 yards/play, 51.3% success, 0.15 EPA/play) is playing solid defense. Go figure. Anyway, the Lions’ 58.2 total points/game trails only the Bills, and no other team can boast zero games gaining fewer than 350 yards from scrimmage. This squad’s such a wagon, it’s making me re-think my “only running QBs ever for fantasy” strategy going forward. Amazing that Jared Goff’s the QB2 in fantasy points/game (22.2) despite just 15 total rushing yards — nutritious food for thought when prepping next season.
Really no point in covering Jahmyr Gibbs other than covering him in well-deserved fantasy flowers. The consensus 1.01 dropped a top-10 performance against GB without even finding the endzone, just the first time he’s been kept out of the paint all year. Gibbs leads the league in backfield opportunity share by a country mile (89.2%), including an insane 18.3% team target share. Utter, unadulterated domination. Backup Sione Vaki’s worthless as a standalone fantasy asset, but he’s also the only Lion RB to earn a touch in 2026 — he should be added every Sunday before kickoff just in case.
To the let-down Sam LaPorta drafters, fret not, well, at least until after Week 8. In the case of Detroit, pies this big can feed entire families, but sometimes a player or two’s left unfulfilled. I get it. Earning just two targets (1-18-0) wasn’t on your fantasy bingo card, though maybe it should have been. Green Bay’s allowed the second-fewest points/game to TEs this season (5.0), behind only this Viking defensive unit (3.9). Not saying LaPorta’s bound to bomb again, but in Minnesota’s case specifically, the elevated blitz rate (42.1%) forces more blockers to the line. Be prepared for another low floor is all I’m saying.
Last note on the high-flying Lions, Jameson Williams’ big (5-91-2) breakout came with some actionable utilization changes. The former first-rounder’s not only running far fewer cardio routes, but simultaneously working more out of the slot. In fact, for the first time all season, Williams made multiple catches from the slot in two straight — and all 4 have gone for TDs. You’d have to buy high to acquire him, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it. Maybe if the Vikings manage to shut the Lions down Sunday, you can find a discouraged leaguemate.
